Our guests understand that in the pursuit of wholeness we must encompass the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health care of each individual, in order to reinvigorate their purpose and meaning. Episode 3: Joan McArthur Blair, EdD & Jeanie Cockell, EdD

Dr. Joan McArthur-Blair, Co-President of Cockell McArthur-Blair Consulting is an inspirational writer, speaker and facilitator. She believes positive leadership matters in the world and all of her work is around enabling and fostering that generative possibility. Joan specializes in the use of appreciative inquiry and appreciative resilience to foster leadership development, strategic planning and innovative strategies for organizational and team development.

Dr. Jeanie Cockell is a dynamic facilitator who is known for her creativity, sense of humor, sensitivity, and ability to get diverse groups to work collaboratively together. She is a leader in Appreciative Inquiry as an organizational and community development process, a research methodology and foundation for fostering collaboration in groups. Through her research and writing she has contributed to the development of new Appreciative Inquiry theory and practice. She is a certified Appreciative inquiry Facilitator trainer for the Center for Appreciative Inquiry and a member of the Council of Practitioners for the David Cooperrider Center for Appreciative Inquiry. 

 


 Episode 2:  Kevin D. Hopkins, MD 

Dr. Kevin Hopkins has been a Staff Physician in the Department of Family Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic since 2005.  Dr. Hopkins also serves as Primary Care Medical Director for Cleveland Clinic Community Care, the Cleveland Clinic’s primary care, population health institute.  Over the past several years he has become a recognized leader and national speaker in the field of Caregiver burnout and ambulatory practice re-design and transformation.

Dr. Hopkins has led the transition of his primary care group to a model of Value-Based Care and is continuing to leverage an advanced team-based care practice model as a vehicle to achieve the goals of population management.  He holds an academic appointment with Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, teaches within the Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program, and is also a faculty instructor for the Cleveland Clinic Global Leadership and Learning Institute.  Dr. Hopkins is a Senior Physician Advisor with the Professional Satisfaction and Practice Sustainability Initiative for the American Medical Association (AMA) and has previously served as a physician advisor for Google Health. 

 


Episode 1:  Paul DeChant, MD, MBA  

Dr. Paul DeChant is a thought leader to C-level executives pursuing organizational well-being. He is an authority on reducing physician burnout by fixing dysfunction in the clinical workplace. He is co-author of the book, “Preventing Physician Burnout: Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine”, speaks internationally, and blogs regularly at www.pauldechantmd.com.

Dr. DeChant is an experienced physician executive with more than 25 years of clinical and management experience in all aspects of medical group leadership, including quality improvement, strategic planning, financial growth, acquisitions, and Lean transformation.

Episode 17:  Todd Richwine, DO

Todd Richwine, DO is a family practice physician who serves as the Chief Medical Information Officer for the Texas Health Physicians Group. He also serves on multiple committees and boards within Texas Health Resources and Southwestern Health Resources.

 

Episode 16:  Christine Maslach, Ph.D

Christina Maslach is a Professor of Psychology (Emerita) and a core researcher at the Healthy Workplaces Center at the University of California, Berkeley.  She received her A.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard-Radcliffe College (1967), and her Ph.D. from Stanford University (1971), and has been on the Berkeley faculty since then. 

Maslach is the pioneer of research on the definition, predictors and measurement of job burnout. This work is the basis for the 2019 decision by the World Health Organization (WHO), to include burnout as an occupational phenomenon, with health consequences, in the ICD-11.  She created the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the most widely used instrument for measuring job burnout, and has written numerous articles and books, including The Truth About Burnout. Several of her articles have received awards for their significance and high impact, including her longitudinal research on early burnout predictors, which was honored in 2012 as one of the 50 most outstanding articles published by the top 300 management journals in the world.

 


Episode 15:  Angela Augusto

Angela Augusto is the Executive Director of Clinical Mission Integration at AdventHealth, a faith-based, non-profit health system serving communities in nine states. She is a driving force behind a compassionate and highly skilled clinical mission integration team, serving 60,000+ caregivers in hospitals, physician practices, cancer institutes, urgent care centers, skilled nursing facilities, and home health and hospice agencies, providing individualized, wholistic care—all in pursuit of one mission: Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ.

 


Episode 14:  Craig Uthe, MD

Craig Uthe, MD is the Physician Director of Professional Health at Sanford Health and Chief Wellbeing Officer of the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.  He had a full scope family practice for 25 year and during that time became certified in Addiction Medicine and in two personality assessments: Myers-Briggs and Hogan Assessment.

 

 


Episode 13:  Jennifer Reid, MD

Jennifer Reid, MDDr. Jennifer Reid is a board-certified psychiatrist and award-winning medical educator with a private practice in Philadelphia. She also has a clinical faculty role at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Reid is a regular contributor to Psychology Today with her blog, “Think Like a Shrink” and writes and podcasts as The Reflective Doc.

 


Episode 12:  Omayra Mansfield, MD

Dr. Omayra Mansfield serves as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for AdventHealth Apopka, and she is also the Chief Medical Officer for the Physician Experience of the Central Florida Division of AdventHealth. She is Board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a Fellow with the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Mansfield completed her medical degree and Masters in Healthcare Administration at the University of Florida and her emergency medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center in North Carolina.


 Episode 11:  Robin Stern, PhD

Dr. Robin Stern, PhD is the Co-founder and Associate Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. She is a licensed psychoanalyst with thirty years of experience treating individuals, couples, and families. She co-developed RULER, an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning that has been adopted by about 4000 public, charter, and private schools across the United States and in many other countries. She also co-founded Oji Life Lab, a mobile learning platform that uses the RULER approach to help people develop their emotional intelligence in the workplace.


 Episode 10:  Christine Porath, PhD

Dr. Christine Porath is a tenured professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.  She’s the author of three books: Mastering Community, Mastering Civility, and The Cost of Bad Behavior. Christine is a frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review, and has written articles for New York Times, Wall Street Journal, McKinsey Quarterly, and Washington Post. 



Episode 9:  Bruce Bethancourt, MD

Until recently,  Bruce Bethancourt, MD, FACP was the Chief Medical Officer of the Dignity Health Medical Group in Arizona.  While there he promoted professionalism and civility in his physicians.  These efforts included a systematic process of feedback and coaching for all of his physicians.  He also developed a National Physician and APP mentoring program for Common Spirit Health (the parent company to Dignity). 


 Episode 8:  Les Schwab, MD

Les Schwab, MD is a primary care physician with 40 years of experience in medical practice and healthcare organizational leadership. Most recently he served as the Chief Medical Office at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates.  Les has attained certification in coaching and now operates a coaching and consulting practice focused on performance improvement and leadership development.  He also served as principal investigator for a randomized controlled study of a coaching intervention that demonstrated a decrease in physician burnout. 


 Episode 7:  Mark T. Hughes, MD, MA

Mark T. Hughes, MD, MA is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and a core faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. He sees patients as a primary care physician and as an inpatient consultant in palliative medicine.  Since soon after the start of the pandemic, Mark has been co-facilitating an online session for health care workers entitled Moral Resilience Rounds. 


Episode 6:  Colin West, MD, PhD

Colin West, MD, PhD is currently Professor of Medicine, Medical Education, and Biostatistics at the Mayo Clinic. He directs the evidence-based medicine curriculum for the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and is Assistant Dean for GME Scholarship at Mayo.  Dr. West's research has focused on medical education and physician well-being, and he is Co-Director of the Mayo Clinic Program on Physician Well-Being. 


Episode 5:  Yotam Dagan

Yotam Dagan is a former Israeli Navy SEAL commander and a certified clinical psychologist with expertise in Combat stress reactions (PTSD) and hostage negotiations. He is the author of two books, and he recently founded Dugri Inc., a startup that builds a support network for healthcare workers. 

 


Episode 4:  Pennie Sempell, JD

Pennie Sempell is the cofounder of StressPal, a Web-based, self-paced platform and peer-networking solution that uses concepts from mindfulness-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy to promote individual and team resilience. 

 


Episode 3:  Neil Finkler, MD

Dr. Neil Finkler currently serves as the chief clinical officer for the entire AdventHealth Central Florida Division and leads the entire continuum of clinical care across the seven-county region that includes nearly 6,000 physicians and advanced practice providers. Finkler joined AdventHealth Orlando in 1992 where he founded the gynecologic oncology program and fellowship program, he is a highly published author, and well-regarded speaker both nationally and internationally. 


Episode 2:  David Rosmarin, PhD

David H. Rosmarin, PhD, is director of the Spirituality and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital and an assistant professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He supervises the provision of spiritually integrated services in clinical programs throughout the hospital’s divisional structure, and collaborates with laboratories to study the clinical relevance of spirituality to anxiety, mood, psychotic, substance use, and other disorders. 


Episode 1:  Rocio Hurtado, MD

Dr. Rocio Hurtado is a practicing Infectious Disease physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital who also works as an executive and wellness coach. She particularly enjoys helping busy physicians learn how to redesign their careers as well as better negotiate for what they want.

Episode 23:  Mona Masood, DO

Dr. Masood is the founder and chief organizer of the Physician Support Line (physiciansupportline.com) - a peer to peer support phone line (1-(888)-409-0141) run by over 700 psychiatrists to help physician colleagues navigate the many intersections of their personal and professional lives during and after the Covid19 crisis. She also practices general outpatient psychiatry in the greater Philadelphia area. 

 


Episode 22:  Timothy Hendrix, MD

As medical director at AdventHealth Centra Care, Dr. Timothy Hendrix oversees the delivery of care at 50 urgent care clinics in Florida, Kansas, and North Carolina. In this podcast, Dr. Hendrix discusses what he does to support the well-being of the clinicians who practice at Centra Care. 

  


Episode 21:  Uma Anand, PhD

Dr. Uma Anand is a counseling psychologist at UC Davis. Over the years, she has incorporated the cognitive aspects of yoga into her practice. This podcast will discuss her experiences using these ideas while working with physicians. 

 


Episode 20:  Rebecca Margolis, DO and Jina Sinskey, MD

Both Dr. Rebecca Margolis and Dr. Jina Sinskey practice Pediatric Anesthesiology and work toward physician well-being in their respective organizations (Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and UCSF). In this podcast, they will describe their common efforts and mutual collaboration.   

 


Episode 19:  Jamie Aten, PhD

Jamie D. Aten, Ph.D., is a disaster psychologist and disaster ministry expert. He helps others navigate mass, humanitarian, and personal disasters with scientific and spiritual insights. 

 


Episode 18:  Shikha Jain, MD 

Dr. Shikha Jain is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Recently, she published findings from her research which demonstrated the prevalence of personal attacks and sexual harassment of physicians on social media. 

 


Episode 17:  Rachel Barbanel-Fried, PsyD

Dr. Rachel Barbanel-Fried, aka Dr. RBF, is a clinical psychologist, writer, and executive coach. She consults with executives and organizations looking to elevate performance and reach new levels of success in the workplace and beyond. 

 


Episode 16:  Sharon Grossman, PhD

Dr. Sharon Grossman is a psychologist, emotional intelligence expert, and the author of The 7E Solution to Burnout. She joins this podcast with a first responder who was helped by reading Sharon's book and applying her methods. 

 


Episode 15:  Michael Weinstein, MD

Dr. Michael Weinstein has published and speaks about his experience as a surgeon who has suffered from episodes of major depression. Michael’s concern about depression in clinicians has also led him to co-found LiveWell Clinicians, an organization that promotes wellbeing, engagement, and professional fulfillment through peer support groups, professional coaching, education, and advocacy. 


Episode 14:  Rick Sheff, MD

Dr. Rick Sheff is the Chief Medical Officer of The Greeley Company, and he brings more than 30 years of healthcare management and leadership experience to his work with physicians, hospitals, and healthcare systems across the country. He consults, authors, and presents on a wide range of healthcare management and leadership issues. 

 


Episode 13:  Susan Wilson, MD - An Adverse Event and How Peer Support Helps

The interview begins with an anonymous obstetrician talking about her experience emotionally dealing with a specific adverse event. She is then joined by Susan Wilson MD who worked as her peer coach after the event. Susan is a retired EM physician who is now certified as a physician peer coach and she has a special interest in peer support for Second Victim Syndrome. 

 


Episode 12:  Daniel Dwyer, PhD

For the past 30 years, Dan has been an ethicist and mission leader at the local, regional, and system wide level in several different religiously sponsored health care systems. Currently, he is the Regional Mission Leader for SSM health in Wisconsin with responsibilities for supporting the Dean Medical Group, Dean Medical Plan, four regional hospitals, and two long term care facilities. Over the years, Dan has facilitated many retreats and workshops for physicians focusing on the search for and/or renewal of meaning and purpose in their lives and work. 


Episode 11:  Steve Reames

Steve Reames is the Executive Director of the Ada County Medical Society, a Boise Idaho based membership association of over 2500 physicians, advanced practice providers, and medical residents and students. In 2016, he led the Ada County Medical Society in creating its Physician Vitality Program. Since then, the society has become recognized as a key leader in the Boise metropolitan medical community on issues of physician burnout, self-care, resilience, and systems change. 

 


Episode 10:  Kelly Bastian, FNP-C

Kelly Bastian is the Managing Director of hospice services at Agape Hospice and Palliative Care in Denver, Co. As a nurse practitioner, she has provided care and served in various leadership roles in Agape for the past 14 years. Kelly is known for her authentic, direct, and down-to-earth approach to patient care, as well as leadership. 

 


Episode 9:  Hala Sabry, DO

Hala Sabry is an emergency medicine physician, a super mom of five children (including two sets of twins), and the founder of Physician Moms Group (the largest online support network for women physician mothers with over 115,000 members). She also offers high-performance coaching to professional women in male-dominated professions, and she works with health organizations to improve their recruitment and engagement practices to include more women. 


Episode 8:  Kathy Gibney, PhD

For 37 years, Kathy Gibney has provided counseling, consulting, education, and training to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Until recently, she was the Director of The Center for Physician Wellbeing at Advent Health where she led initiatives to support physicians, advanced practice providers, and their families. In this role, she also created educational initiatives that promoted the hospital community’s wellbeing culture. Kathy is virtually catching up with family and friends, as well as providing consulting during the COVID19 pandemic. 


Episode 7:  Herbert Schumm, MD

Herb Schumm is a family physician by training and an administrator by experience. For 11 years before becoming a healthcare executive, he had a busy private practice that included obstetrics.  He then served for 15 years as the Vice President of Medical Affairs at St. Rita’s Health Partners. In fall of 2012, he became President of St. Rita’s Professional Services, and in 2016 he moved into a new role leading provider professional development for Mercy Health, now Bon Secours Mercy Health. 


Episode 6:  Barbara Hernandez, PhD

Barbara Hernandez is the founding director of the Office of Physician Vitality which she has led since 2011. She began her career as an ICU nurse, while becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist and behavioral health educator. Her clinical background includes private and group practice, therapist trainee supervision, and training clinic directorships. Loma Linda University Health was recognized for excellence in its support of physician well-being under her leadership as a recipient of the Medicus Integra award from the Coalition in 2016. 


Episode 5:  Steve Sartori, MD

Steve Sartori is Director of The Center for Well-being at Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA). He has been CEO of a private group practice, chief of staff at two hospitals, faculty member for a family medicine residency program, and chief medical officer for a faith-based community health center. He is now a certified physician coach, who helps doctors and other healthcare professionals align with God, optimize well-being and maximize influence. 


Episode 4:  Dan Diamond. MD

Dan Diamond is a family physician with years of international disaster experience.  He was deployed to the Philippines following Typhoon Yolanda, led one of the first teams into Haiti after their devastating earthquake, and played a strategic role as the Director of the Medical Triage Unit in the New Orleans Convention Center following Hurricane Katrina. Episode 3:  William Bynum, MD

Will Bynum is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and the Family Medicine Residency Program Director at Duke University. His primary academic interest centers on the role of self-conscious emotions (shame, guilt, and pride) in the medical learning experience. He and his team have published articles from their qualitative work with residents and medical students. He is conducting this program of research through a PhD in health professions education at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. 


Episode 2:  Mary Wolf, MS, LPC-MH

Mary Wolf is the Program Director for the Avera Medical Group’s LIGHT Program, a wellbeing program for physicians, nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants. In this role, she provides executive coaching to help people improve their leadership skills, manage transitions, and deal with grief/work pressures, or family issues. Through her work, she helps caregivers find ways to create meaning and joy in practicing medicine. Mary also owns Veritee Partners, an executive/physician coaching and wellbeing consulting business. 


Episode 1:  Sue Kiernan, MA/PCC/CPC

Sue Kiernan started her professional career as a speech and language pathologist and then worked her way up through different healthcare executive leadership roles in large healthcare systems. Sue is now a leadership coach who focuses on healthcare. She founded her business, Centered on Success, in 2000, and during that time has coached hundreds of providers, including nurses, Advance Practice Providers, physicians, and leaders at all levels. She is accredited by the International Coach Federation and the Physicians Coaching Institute.
